Malcolm Turnbull’s attempt to save Australia’s electricity grid from imminent collapse has been tagged the National Energy Guarantee. Whether or not it guarantees that the lights stay on and the economy can keep limping along, is anybody’s guess. However, it is a guarantee of controversy. When the wind industry, its parasites and spruikers finally tumble to what the NEG means for them there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. And those who want to kill off the Renewable Energy Target (like STT) will never rest easy, until the greatest policy disaster in Australian history is just that: history.Probably because 99% of power consumers (in States other than SA) assume that Australia’s electricity grid is fine and will keep ticking along forever, forestalling state-wide ‘system blacks’ (of the kind routinely suffered in South Australia) isn’t high on their priorities.Until New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria start suffering load shedding and blackouts due to wind and solar power output collapses (like their South Australian cousins), rocketing power prices will continue to act as the Sunday afternoon barbecue stopper. The Australian’s Chris Kenny is quite right to maintain the focus on, and the rage against, power prices which are now the highest in the world, and which are set to double over the next two or three years, all thanks to pointless moral posturing.
